Suopo Village Towers

Aba Prefecture, China

Suopo Village Towers are located in the Suopo Township of Garze Tibetan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. There are 84 watchtowers made of stone and wood spread all over the town. The heights of the watchtowers range from 20 meters to 60 meters. They were obviously built to look out for invading enemies. According to researchers, the watchtowers are at least 1,000 years old. Yet, they have withstood earthquakes and erosion and are still standing. The towers are positioned in such a way that there are lookouts in all the directions for a possible invasion. They symbolize the classic architectural techniques of the ancient Qiang people in the region.
