Pingyao City Walls

Pingyao, China

Pingyao City Wall was first built during the Zhou Dynasty. A major extension followed in 1370 when the Ming Dynasty turned it into a wall of stone and bricks. The wall is located in the Pingyao Old Town and is in total four miles long. The highest point of the wall is 40 feet and has a rectangular shape that reminds a bit of a tortoise from above.

Two city gates can be found on east and west walls, while one each is located on south and north walls. In total, there are 72 watchtowers and the wall is surrounded by a moat.
