Qibao Catholic Church

Shanghai, China

Tourists going to Minhang district, are usually particularly looking forward to experiencing China as it was in imperial times, preserved in meticulous detail within the Qibao Ancient Town. Their idea of those times is oriental landscaping and Buddhist temples, houses with red tiles and heaven facing eaves and shops selling tea and souvenirs. So, it comes as a pleasant shock when they find (completely by accident) at the edges of Qibao Town a perfectly preserved, pristine white Church in stark contrast against the blue sky!

Metro line 9 of the Shanghai subway makes a stop at Qibao station from whence, tourists exiting from gate 2 will reach Qibao Ancient Town after a few minutes’ stroll. However, if they keep going further south along main Qixin road and turn left at Baonan road, they will come upon this gleaming place of worship. Buses will take travelers to Baonan road as it is close to Shanghai Jiaotong university campus. The church is free to enter and enjoy the peace the tranquil space offers. However, be respectful during worship timings by not making loud conversation and silencing mobile devices. There are not many eateries around but tourists can get food back in the streets of Qibao town.

Qibao Catholic Church was built during the Qing dynasty and there are pictures which show the Church during the late 1800’s. When it was constructed in the sixth year of Tongzhi, it had a dominating main clock tower with a pointed ceiling with two complimentary smaller towers on either side. The entrance was barred with an imposing wooden door with beautiful carving and there were niches on the main outside wall on either side of the entrance door with artwork inside. However, during the ages it lost its glory but there was a massive restoration effort at the turn of the century, in the year 2000. This very much simplified the more elaborate design elements yet kept the general feel of the original construction. Since than the Church has fared well in its quite spot at the edges of Qibao town. The architecture is distinctly Gothic and there are statues of Jesus and Mary on premises. Fine details mark various nooks and crannies and are pleasing to catch. Inside the atmosphere is at once spiritual and solemn. Neat rows of wooden benches line the hall and at the helm is a grand podium characteristic of Catholic churches. The glass-stained windows provide an elegant backdrop to the sober environment of Qibao church. Next to it is a double story living quarter for the priests who manage the place, which is connected to the main building through a side door.

There is not much history mentioned inside the church but it is a peaceful place in an unexpected corner; a place to visit for some respite. It is recommended to combine a visit to this place with a trip to Qibao Ancient Town and Nanqibao Temple, a Buddhist temple in the same general vicinity of both these attractions.
