The Great Wall at Shandan

Dunhuang, China

Shandan County in Gansu Province is home of one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall. Some parts of the Wall were built in 206 BC, during the Han Dynasty, while others are younger and date back to the Ming Dynasty era. This is one of the favorite Great Wall exploration sites, as it is a true open-air museum. Lots of towers, trenches and untouched parts of the wall make this destination the most attractive one for those keen on history and archaeology. Megalithic portions of stones are very well-preserved in certain parts, while deterioration has made significant damage in the others.
