Great Wall of China at Huangya Pass

Tianjin, China

The Great Wall of China at Huangya Pass has a variety of defense systems built during the Qi and the Ming Dynasties. The stone bases were built by one and the brickwork battlements were constructed by the other. Because two different construction styles were used, parts of the wall are hollow in some places and solid in some places. They are square in one place and round in another. Another unusual aspect of the Huangya Pass are the inscribed steles and the bamboo strips with couplets carved on them. The Widow Tower at the Pass has carvings of beautiful dragons, kylins, phoenixes, and crouching lions.
