ZHOU ENLAI RESIDENCE

Zhou Enlai Residence

Shanghai, China

Zhou Enlai was China's premier between 1949 and 1976 when he died. His former residence at Sinan Road, Old French Concession area, Shanghai is a tourist attraction of high standard. The building combines Chinese architectural prowess with western style to reveal an edifice resembling a French colonial structure. The shikumen-style, three-story building features three-sided roof sections, ivy-clad exterior, shuttered windows and so on. The stone gates that detach the shikumen building from the street is a replica of older "arrondissements" in Paris. On top of the gate is a stele written by Chen Gun which pays tribute to Zhou En Lai Zu Ju, China's first premier.
