Puji Temple

Putuo Shan, China

One of the holiest Chan Buddhist shrines in the Zhoushan archipelago, Zhejiang Province, China is the Puji Temple. Located on Putuo Shan Island, it was built during the Tang and Qing Dynasties. It is dedicated to the Goddess Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Salvation. The temple consists of the Shanmen (gate), Four Heavenly King Hall, Yuantong Hall, Dayuantong Hall, Mahavira Hall, Buddhist Sutra Hall, Hall of Arhats, Imperial halls, Hall of Guru, Meditation Hall, Dining hall, and 357 other rooms. The 33-meters tall statue of Goddess Guanyin is the most impressive sight at the temple. In fact, the statue dominates the horizon and can be seen from a long distance even before you reach the islands.
