The ancient Arhat Temple lies in a very busy street in downtown Chongqing, China. It gets its name from the 700 life-size statues of Arhats (those who have attained nirvana) in the temple complex. The temple was destroyed during the Japan and China wars and the 10-Year Upheaval of 1966-1976. But the temple was restored, and the Arhats you see today were molded in the year 1986. The statue of Sakyamuni in the main hall is a very impressive figure. You will also find 400 ancient Buddhist statues and numerous texts. You must try the delicious vegetarian meal at the temple’s restaurant, especially the soy curry that tastes like meat.
