Hanging Temple

Datong, China

Around 62Kms from Datong, Shanxi Province, China is the Hanging Temple precariously balancing on the slopes of Mount Heng Shan. At first sight you feel it is defying gravity and should have collapsed a long time ago! In fact, this temple was built by Liao Ran, a monk during the ancient Wei Dynasty and still stands. It was built by drilling large holes in the mountain, into which thick wooden poles were inserted to support the base of the temple. This is not the only unique aspect of the temple! Another unusual fact is that followers of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism all pray at the temple. The numerous carvings and 78 exquisite statues are definitely worth the visit.
