Wooden Pagoda
Datong, China
The Sakyamuni Pagoda (Fogong Temple or Yingxian Wooden Pagoda) situated in the Shanxi Province, China is simply referred to as the Wooden Pagoda. Built in 1056 A.D. during the Liao Dynasty, the Pagoda stands on a 4-meters high stone platform. The total height is 67.31 meters and it is one of the oldest completely wooden Pagodas in the world. The building is octagonal and is an amazing example of Chinese timber craft because it was constructed without using a single screw, nail, or bolt to keep the structure in place. Hence, the eaves have the most complicated construction that has never been found anywhere in the world.
