A tulou is a fortified residential area constructed with mud, bamboo, stone, and wood that is quake-proof. It has a 1.8 meters thick wall and is sturdy and comfortable in any season. The Yuchanglou Tulou (Hakka houses) is a zigzag tulou located in the Xiabanliao Village of Nanjing County, China. It belongs to the Liu clan and was first built in 1308 during the Yuan Dynasty and extended as and when required. Even after 700 years it has remained intact. This 5-storied tulou has 270 rooms, with an average of 50-55 rooms on each floor. There are 25 kitchens on the ground floor and each one has a separate water supply.
