It is believed that Dapeng was built towards the end of the 14th century during the Ming Dynasty. At the time, it was constructed with the idea of fighting pirates that were attacking from the South China Sea. Dapeng Ancient City also served as an important post for defending against the British during the Opium War.
Regardless of the history, Dapeng is an extremely well-preserved city. You enter through a series of gates and, as you walk or drive you can see numerous military residences. Perhaps the most famous one is the home of General Zhenwei with impressive halls and fascinating courtyards.
