On the 18th day of the eighth lunar Chinese month (mid-Autumn) is the world-famous Tidal Wave Watching Festival in Haining City, Zhejiang Province, China. Millions of people from China and overseas come here to watch the tidal waves that sound like thunder and rise up to 9 meters in height. Haining is situated in the Qiantang River Tidal Bore area. Centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the Earth creates a unique bottleneck which allows the Qiantang River water to come into the Hangzhou Bay but difficult for it to ebb. This causes a massive surge in the movement of water and creates magnificent tidal waves. Haining has many affordable and high-end resorts where tourists can stay during the Tidal Wave Watching Festival.
