Zhan'ao Pagoda (Yanguan)

Hangzhou, China

The Zhan’ao Pagoda is part of the Haining Tidal Wave Watching Park, Hangzhou, China. This popular tourist attraction is also known as the “Pagoda to calm down the river”. It was supposed to have been built to calm down the Qiantang River which creates 9-meters tall tidal waves in the Hangzhou Bay in the autumn season. The Pagoda has a long history because it was first built during the Song Dynasty and extended during the Ming Dynasty. It is an imposing 40-meters tall structure and appears to have 7 floors when seen from outside. But this wood and brick structure is so unique that it actually has 8 floors inside. The beautiful architecture definitely makes it a must-see place.
