Great Wall at Ningwu Guan (Ningwu Pass)

Built in the middle part of the Ming Dynasty's rule, the Ningwu Guan (Ningwu Pass), Shanxi Province, China was the most important pass. It had a strategic location during the wars with the Mongols and Manchus. Besides its military importance, the Pass is also a beautiful area. When seen from a height, the pass looks like the body of the legendary phoenix bird. The Huagai Mountain to the north looks like the phoenix head. The eastern and western fortifications look like the wings. The tail of the phoenix is represented by the southern Yingxun Tower. The Drum tower in the center is considered the phoenix's heart. Hence, it is also called the Phoenix City and is a popular attraction.
