NANJING DRUM TOWER
Nanjing Drum Tower
The Nanjing Drum Tower was built during the Ming Dynasty on Gulou (Purple) Mountain, Nanjing, China. In the ancient times, the Drum Tower was an important place for ceremonies, for welcoming important imperial guests, for offering sacrifices to appease the God, and other royal events. Made from bricks and wood, the tower is 44 meters long, 30 meters tall, and 22 meters wide and is an awesome sight. Its shape is like that of a Chinese gate with a large stone base. There are triple arches rising from the base, the middle arch being larger than the two at the sides. In ancient times, the side arches were guarded by hundreds of soldiers and imperial drumming officers.
