Changtang Region
Shigatse, China
The home of the nomadic Changpa Tibetans, the Changtang (Changthang or Qangtang) Region is a very vast area. It extends over the northern and western Tibetan Plateau down to Ladakh in India. The altitude of the region is between 4200-5800 meters above sea level. The famous Changtang Nature Reserve (north and east) and the Changtang Wildlife Sanctuary (south) have fantastic mountain peaks, deep gorges, virgin forests, vast lakes, and an abundance of flora and fauna. The large Indus River passes through the Sanctuary, adding to the beauty of the natural landscape. Make sure your cab driver knows the route very well because you may not find anyone on the way for miles to ask for directions!
