WOFO SI (TEMPLE OF THE RECUMBENT BUDDHA)
Wofo Si (Temple of the Recumbent Buddha)
The Wofo Si temple is one of the most visited places in Beijing because of its history, architecture, and its proximity to the Botanical Garden. The temple contains a massive 5.2 meters long bronze statue of a Recumbent (reclining) Buddha which weighs 2.5 tons. The temple has a complicated history. It was first built in the 7th century and was called the Doulu temple. It was destroyed, rebuilt, and underwent changes in names over several centuries. In the 18th century, the present bronze statue was established during the Yuan Dynasty in place of the original sandstone one.
